About Arnold Hence
I was born in Jackson, Michigan and grew up in Minneapolis. Minnesota. I began taking pictures in about the seventh grade and my photography reflects who I am and how my life has evolved over the years. I first became interested in photography while watching the TV program "Mike Kovac Man with a Camera" starring Charles Bronson. My mom bought me an old Polaroid that resembled the camera he used to carry around and I took almost everywhere I went.
My three major photographic interests are African-American civil rights and historic sites, landscapes and old cars. The interest in civil rights memorials emanated from being stationed in the south during the Civil Rights era and personally experiencing the racial tension and hostility during that period. Many of the places where some horrible things took place have now become historic landmarks. I want to help preserve that legacy to show not only how far America has come but how far we have to go.
The interest in landscapes, seascapes. etc are a throwback to my childhood days. I loved to swim, fish and hunt. They also reflect the majesty of God's creation. The old cars with a few exceptions are cars that I thought were really cool as a teenager. (yes I am dating myself, but I am blessed to still be here.)
Since retiring as the executive vice president of a community college a few years ago, I now have more time to devote to something that I dearly love. It enables me to relax, reflect, do what I want and speak my mind thru my art. The Arnold logo in case you are interested honors the legacy my mother, Mattie Virginia Hence Broden left with me. It depicts my first name Arnold which means strong as an eagle, (the bird) and my middle name Timothy which means honoring God symbolized by the Cross. I hope you find meaning in my work.
May God bless you
Arnold T. Hence, Ed.D.
