This is a night time image of the Sparks Cascades in my home town of Jackson, Michigan. The Cascades is the result of a dream of Williams Sparks, who moved to Jackson from England in the 1800s. He wanted to provide visitors with a positive impression of Jackson. The falls were first opened in 1932 and I am proud to say that my great uncle played a role in helping to build it. While the Cascades briefly fell upon hard times it has since come back to be the beautiful space that it is today. The falls are 500 feet long, 64 feet high and 60 feet wide. There are 6 fountains, 16 falls, 11 of which are illuminated by over 1200 colored lights which change colors every few seconds. Steps (which cannot be seen in this image) run alongside the falls. There are stadium seats and benches that will accommodate up to 3000 people to watch a show. The Cascades bring fond memories of riding my bicycle out there at night as a teen. Personal background: I was born in Jackson, Michigan and raised in Minneapolis, MN. After attending 11 different schools between kindergarten and the 11th grade I decided to join the U.S. Army where I served for seven years, specializing in radar and computer repair.. I have since earned Masters and Doctoral degrees from Rutgers University, served 36 years in higher education and retired five years ago as Executive Vice President of Forsyth Technical Community College in North Carolina. My wife Anna & I have two children and 5 grandchildren.
