Description
This the Nike Hercules guided missile, my favorite of the systems I worked on in the Army. It was designed to knock out incoming planes during the Vietnam era. Rather than actually hitting the planes like the HAWK missile, it struck from above and in front of an airplane and knocked it out of the sky with a high explosive shock wave. It was capable carrying a small nuclear warhead that could knock out a fleet of 100 airplanes. Most major cities in the United States were surrounded by Nike Hercules missile sites to protect them from attacks by the Russians during the 1960s. We were required to launch a missile within 15 minutes after it was identified by Radar. This and the HAWK missile are located in the NASA Marshal Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL. It brought back lot of memories when I visited it recently.
