Artist's Description

These are the ruins of the once majestic Hilltop House Hotel in Harper's Ferry, WV. It sits on top of a hill overlooking the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers. It was originally built by Thomas Lovett, a Black man born in Virginia in 1855. According to one article it was built on this location to commemorate the abolitionist John Brown's courageous stand against slavery. Many famous people stayed there including W.E.B. Dubois, Mark Twain, Carl Sandberg, Alexander Graham Bell and President Bill Clinton. The hotel was also listed in the Negro Motorist Green Book about which a recent film was made, though its focus was primarily in the deep south. While the hotel closed its doors in 2008, there are plans to have it rebuilt as a luxury resort once details can be worked out between the developers and city officials in Harpers Ferry, WV. There is more information about the project on Google.
