Description
This is the train station in Jackson, Michigan where I was born. As a young child, my father and I used to stand and watch the trains come and go. At that time there was one about every hour. Local trains stopped in Jackson, while "express" trains often did not. He worked for the New York Central Railroad and knew the name, and time of arrival of every train. He loved the railroad and used to repair locomotives. He was known as a boilermaker helper because as a black man he could not be a boilermaker. Ironically, as my mom shared with me, when there was a particularly difficult problem with an engine they would always call him.
