Description
"Can you Swim?" John Lewis asked his friend Hosea Williams as they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge. This view of that famous bridge shows the bridge-to-water perspective. If John Lewis, Hosea Williams or anyone else had decided to jump rather than face the Alabama State Troopers, the distance from the center of the bridge to the water would have been 100 feet. The impact of hitting the water from that height would have been enough to cause serious injury or death.
